Army Official Says Shooting Suspect Alive and in Custody
(CNN) -- At least one soldier opened fire on a military processing center at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, killing 12 and wounding 31 others, officials at the Army base said.
The gunman, who officials initially said was killed, is wounded but alive, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said. Cone said that man is believed to be the only shooter. Two other soldiers briefly taken into custody after the incident were later released, a spokesman said.

Fort Hood, Texas (CNN) -- The suspect in Thursday's deadly shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, is in stable condition, the hospital commander at the base said Friday.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, was shot multiple times and was taken into custody, ending the shooting rampage Thursday afternoon, Fort Hood officials said.
The gunman opened fire at a military processing center at Fort Hood, killing one civilian and 12 soldiers, said Col. John Rossi, deputy commanding general at Fort Hood.
Twenty-eight people are still hospitalized and in stable condition, Rossi said at a news conference Friday morning. Hasan is the sole suspect in the shootings, Rossi said.

In the nearby town of Killeen, a SWAT team and FBI agents were searching Hasan's apartment to help determine what caused the shooting, which military experts called the worst mass shooting at an American military base, Carol Smith, a Killeen police spokeswoman, said early Friday.
As investigators gathered evidence, details began to emerge about the alleged shooter.
Hasan, 39, is a graduate of Virginia Tech and a psychiatrist licensed in Virginia. He previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
A federal official said Hasan is a U.S. citizen of Jordanian descent. Military documents show Hasan was born in Virginia and has never deployed outside the United States.
An owner of a 7-Eleven convenience store in Fort Hood said Hasan, whom he knows as "Major Nidal," came in for coffee and hash browns most mornings, including the morning of the shootings.

Hasan was reported to have been wearing his uniform when he opened fire, said Col. Steven Braverman, hospital commander at Fort Hood. Braverman said Hasan had received orders to deploy to Afghanistan.
I'm personally glad he's alive. Now he's left with knowing he'll be left to face his peers, the people he tried to kill and the families of those he did. He didn't get the benefit of dying.

Some have said that it wasn't an act of terrorism. If not, then we need to apologize to jihadists everywhere.
bless the souls of the dead. comfort the hearts of the living.
is every belief system compatible with ours?
NO apologies here. That's Chairman Hussein's job.
If as a Muslim, instead of going to Iraq or wherever he was going to support the war against terrorist Muslims, he instead chooses to kill as many American soldiers as he can before being taken down himself, then that is a terrorist act.
Or to be more politically sensitive in the new age of obama, he is just an unhappy camper. And who can blame him having to live in an imperialistic country like America whose policies fly in the face of jihad traditions.
I don't know where to draw the line between "he snapped" and "terrorist." Given the apparent lack of premeditation, I'm inclined to think he just snapped. I'm sure that we're going to hear more and more about this guy in the days to come, so I'll hold off on further comment until we know more.
Our local radio talk show guy was reading a CNN article , where they'd interviewed a Lt Col who was playing golf at a nearby course, and witnessed 40 vehicles full of MP's and later cars of men in black suits (FBI), that chased him down and arrested him 2.5 miles from the shooting. He was arrested because he said he was with the shooter.
The stories have been contradicting and wildly conflicting since just yesterday, finishing off with this final "just one shooter" piece. I just find it odd that this man, who supposedly hates going to the gun range, a shrink who's never seen combat, can shoot 43 people by himself before being taken down in a military base... by local law enforcement.
I didn't want to post it in the story, but is anybody else saying "hhhmmmmm" here?
1) He went to a location that is little more than a wide open room with dividers instead of walls. They call it something different now that they're doing real deployments, but in my days at FT Hood it was known as the "EDRE building" (Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise); there are desks (and lines) for everything from getting a quick dental exam to getting a second set of dogtags pressed and double-checking your serviceman's life insurance. You'll find hundreds of soldiers milling about in that building on any given day, none of whom are armed.
2) As far as 'local law enforcement' is concerned, remember that the Army privatized a big chunk of post security some years ago. Sure, there are still MPs around, but there are also DAC (Department of the Army Civilian) security guards and civilian contractor guards, with local LE folks (e.g. Killeen PD) on call as well.
It was really strange to see my old barracks in the stock footage...
I'm hearing the usual right wing nuts say things like "figures, he was a Muslim" or criticizing Hasan for calling himself a "Muslim first" then an American. Fair enough, I agree. Anyone who would kill in the name of his particular imaginary sky daddy is insane. The fact is that Muslims do blow up buildings, hijack planes and shoot up military bases. And I think the problem is religion. Religion makes people crazy.
But, Muslims aren't the only ones who commit terrorist acts in the name of their religion. Christians commit terrorist acts too. Maybe they do it less than Muslims, but does that make it okay?
I have no problem saying that I am an American first and foremost. The US Constitution is the law of the land and is second to nothing in my view. The Constitution says that this country shall have no established religion nor shall have religious tests. When are we going to start living up to what the founders had in mind for us? Why do so many people in this country think being "a man of faith" is a good thing?
Also, I would like to know how many Christians here are Christians first, then Americans? Wes? Grayrider? Skinnydip? What is more important - your God or your country?
Easy question. Christian first.
Wrong time to be pretend to be the centrist, Wes. What part of premeditatedly arming himself with two handguns, reloading numerous times, blogging about suicide bombers being equivalent to those that would throw themselves on a grenade to save their friends don't you get?
Egg... our forefathers left England so we wouldn't have to choose between the two.
Well, if he snapped, that takes obama off the hook, so yeah, that is convenient.
Egghead, individuals who call themselves Christians commit all sorts of abhorrent acts that have nothing to do with Christianity and they generally do not commit these crimes in the name of or for the cause of their religion. We have no doctrine that calls for the killing of innocent people in the name of our God, Jesus Christ.
The Koran, however, does and extreme Islamics live by such doctrine.
Of course you know this but you choose to feign ignorance. Then again.............
